PLEASE Check Out Our Frequently Asked Questions BELOW!
Q: How much product do I need?
A: ONE Quart Kit should be enough to refinish a Dining room table, base and leaves OR a large dresser.
ONE Gallon should be enough to do an entire dining room (table, chairs, credenza, buffet) OR an entire bedroom (headboard, footboard, 2 nighstands, tall dresser, long dresser).
These are just examples to help you. Every piece is unique and may take more or less depending on the condition of the piece. A single piece (nightstand/end table) will take less than a quart. MOST customers order a QUART KIT.
Q: What sizes do you offer?
A: Quarts and Gallons. Pints are not available.
Q: What comes in the Kit?
A: Kits include both the Stain and Toned Finishing Varnish, plus instructions.
Stains are the base Stain & instructions only, and do not include any Toned Finishing Varnish.
Q: Why would I buy only the Stain alone instead of the Kit? Do I HAVE to use your Toned Varnish?
A: If you prefer to buy your own finish, that is perfectly acceptable. We offer the Kit with the Toned varnish as a set to re-create the "original" Heywood Wakefield finish. Our water borne stains can be coated with any of your favorite finishes once dry. They are compatible with lacquer, oil, poly, urethane, wax, etc. If you prefer to stay with a water based finish, we recommend:
Q: Do I have to strip and/or sand my furniture down to bare wood to use your products?
A: YES. Plain and simple. Our products are not meant to be used, and are not compatible on top of any existing finish. They are not designed to be used on only parts (such as the tops) of pieces while not refinishing the entire piece. Elbow grease is needed. But it is SO worth the effort.
Q: What is the difference between the terms varnish/finish/poly/top coat/lacquer, etc?
A: These industry terms are many times used interchangeably, while each is slightly different. There are many different terms to describe the finish coating. We use the word "varnish" as it is the most easily recognized term for the finish coat in "layman's terms". Our "varnish" is a water borne polyurethane. It is eco-friendly, easy to work with and durable.
Q: What should I use to strip/sand my furniture?
A: The provided instructions will answer these questions. But the SHORT answer is any paste stripper from your local hardware/home store (Klean Strip and Citri Strip are good) and 180/220 grit sandpaper.
Q: I am not a professional refinisher . Are your products easy to use and can I still purchase them?
A: YES. All orders come with COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS which will give specific detailed instructions and it's VERY easy to use. Anyone can technically purchase our finishes, we don't require proof of trade.
Q: I am a Professional Refinisher and my customer wants me to use your products. Can the stain and/or finish be sprayed?
A: No. The stain is a wiping stain. The finish is a brush-on finish. If you prefer to use your own finish, that is perfectly acceptable. Our water borne stains can be coated with any of your favorite finishes once dry. They are compatible with lacquer, oil, poly, urethane, wax, etc. IF your finish is WATER based, as small amount of stain can be added to the finish to create the "Toned" effect.
Q: Do you offer discounts to the "trade" (Refinishers, Designers, etc.)?
A. No. Unfortunately we are not able to offer discounts.
Q: I have water stains, black marks and/or wood filler on my furniture. Will the stain cover these?
A: Multiple coats of stains will cover MINOR imperfections. The more coats that are applied, the more opaque it will get. All pieces should be stripped and sanded down to bare wood before application. Stainable wood filler should be used. If sanding does not remove them, Wood Bleach can be used prior to stain to remove black marks. Follow manufacturer's directions for Wood Bleach. You may want to use Wood Conditioner as well. Follow manufacturer's directions for Wood Conditioner.
Q: Which color do I need? Wheat or Champagne?
A: Please refer to the picture examples on the previous page. Wheat is lighter and more yellow. Champagne is darker and pinker. The color choice is a personal preference. Changing a piece from one color to another will not affect the value.
Q: My piece is not marked Wheat or Champagne. How will I know what color it is?
A: See above answer.
Q: Do you provide samples of your Wheat and/or Champagne stains?
A: No. Please refer to the color samples on the previous page. You may find your Champagne piece is more pink, or your Wheat more orange. The fact is, many of the original colors don't match one another. Heywood's finishes were known to differ throughout the years. Another factor is the aging process of the lacquer that was used in the 40's and 50's. The early lacquers turned yellow/orange with age. This is not so noticeable on a darker finish, but has a great effect on lighter finishes such as Wheat or Champagne. For various reasons, many pieces have aged differently. We have seen many Wheat pieces we thought were Champagne, and visa versa. When we developed our stains, we chose to recreate the most common color that we feel is most often found.
Q: Can I use your stain and toner to just do PART (for example, the top) of a piece of furniture instead of stripping and refinishing the whole piece?
A: No. For ALL of the reasons listed above, we cannot guarantee that our color will match your piece. Our products are intended for complete refinishing of the piece(s) only.
Q: Why are your products labeled "For Professional Use Only" ?
A: While we do not require proof of trade to purchase, we now label our products for professional use only. By purchasing, consumer implies that they are in the furniture refinishing trade and therefor possess a good general knowledge of furniture stains, finishes and application procedures. While proof of trade is not required for purchase, it IS required for any returns or refunds with the exception of products damaged in shipping.
The Restoration Studio LLC reserves the right to refuse future purchases to any consumer, both trade or non trade.
Q: Which color is more valuable? Wheat or Champagne?
A: While we see more Champagne pieces than Wheat, they are equally as valuable.
Q: Do you sell the Platinum, Cinnamon, or Westwood Heywood Wakefield finish? Or any other colors?
